To Consider When Budgeting for Grants & Contracts

Budgeting

  • Graduate Student Researchers (GSR)
  • Additional Compensation
    • Fiscal year faculty (11-monthers) accrue vacation (valuable upon retirement) but must exchange some of this when taking additional comp (any month not teaching), thus they do best by targeting low vacation hour months (Feb/Nov/Dec) or medium ones (Jan/July) and avoiding high ones (April/May/Aug/Oct) (these depend on the year– advise checking with account manager).
    • Academic year faculty (9-monthers) don’t accrue vacation, thus don’t need to exchange; can only take during summer months but can take 3 months in contrast to the limit of 1 month for 11-month faculty. 9-month faculty can get an additional 3 months of salary for work during the summer through grants and contracts.
  • Salary Savings
    • You can use grant money to pay some of your normal salary and 75% returns to your faculty account.
    • If you have an AES appointment, then you have some percentage of that AES appointment title, for example "agronomist." If you are X% “agronomist”:  $75*X% goes to your 99300 acct and $75*(1-X%) to your 99100.
